Pregnancy: 2 Weeks

How does the baby grow

Before the baby actually starts growing, mother’s body will prepare the foundation. During week 1, an increase in the amount of estrogen and progesterone coursing through mother’s bloodstream prompted her uterus to form a blood-rich lining of tissue to support a potential fertilized egg. At the same time, eggs were ripening inside the ovaries. Generally, around day 14 of a 28-day cycle, females ovulate: One of the eggs erupts from its follicle and is swept away from the ovary into a Fallopian tube. During the next 12 to 24 hours that egg will be fertilized if one of the sperm penetrates the egg. Only about 400 sperms out of 250 million sperms ejaculated (on an average), will survive the hard ten-hour journey to the egg, and only one will succeed in burrowing through its outer membrane.

During the next ten to 30 hours, the nucleus of the sperm & the egg will merge as they combine their genetic material. If the sperm carries a Y chromosome, the baby will be a boy; if it's an X chromosome, the baby will be a girl. At this stage, the baby is just a little cluster of cells known as a Blast cyst in scientific terms: Its inner cell mass will become the embryo, the fluid-filled cavity will become the amniotic sac, and the outer cell mass will become the placenta.
